A MEMORABLE NIGHT FOR WINNERS OF NCA

By Koay Chun Foong
An animation not unlike that of the Hollywood blockbuster Iron Man saw Shahizzat Azirul Hashim bag the Mind Blowing Sound Effects awards at the Astro's Nextgen Contentpreneur Awards (NCA) recently.

Shahizzat, a student from Multimedia University (MMU), deservingly took centrestage as he won his second of the night in Most Amazing Visual Effects award. His winning entry was titled The Last Painting.

The students-only NCA, in its third edition, gave out 10 awards in total. It was held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

MMU's students dominated the award ceremony as the institution provided another three winners in Victoria Muthu, Charukphong Anuvong and Mohd Nor Shafiq Safian.
The trio won Outstanding Music Video, Incomparable Animation and Most Inspiring Public Service Announcement awards respectively. MMU had also produced five winners in last year's NCA.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman's (UTAR) representatives gained the lion's share of the remaining five awards as they won two.

Woo Mun Kit was the winner of Extraordinary Short Content for TV while Teoh Shu Chyi walked off with the Revolutionary Documentary award. It was the second time for UTAR to win the latter prize in as many years.

Mohd Afiq Deen Azizan of International Islamic University Malaysia took the Phenomenal Art Direction prize with Maria. His video was also nominated for the Extraordinary Short Content award.

Ng Kien Meei (In House Multimedia College) and Lau Yoon Loong (Dasein Academy of Art) completed the roundup with their respective winning entries in Unique Web Design and Exceptional Graphic Design.

Winners of each category of the NCA were given RM10, 000 cash prize, a trophy and an opportunity to take part in an actual production for Astro.
Vice President of Astro's Content Development Unit Khairul Mizan revealed in the post-award interview that he had visited the tertiary-level education institutions and met the students.

"It was great to have a fantastic turnout from the students when we made our visits," he said.
When asked of works comparison of this year's to last, Khairul said the qualities and standards of the works nominated had always been high. However, there had been many entries disqualified for failing to fulfill proper contesting procedures.

"Unfortunately, we had students sending in their CDs and just write their name on it. We don't accept that," he noted.
Astro NCA came to fruition after joint efforts from Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission and Multimedia Development Corporation.
